Casa Batlló, one of Antoni Gaudí’s architectural gems, began its extraordinary journey in 1904, when he was commissioned to renovate an existing building on Barcelona’s prestigious avenue Passeig de Gràcia. The crown jewel of Catalan Modernist architecture, Casa Batlló, represents far more than a residential building. It is a celebration Gaudí had embodied Barcelona’s creative spirit and cultural identity with this extraordinary structure.
Completed in 1906, the building attracts thousands of visitors annually, making it one of Barcelona’s most popular tourist attractions. In 2005, Casa Batlló was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

THE EXTERIOR
Casa Batlló’s facade resembles a living, organic creature more than a traditional structure. Covered in a mosaic of iridescent ceramic tiles that shimmer in shades of blue, green, and purple, the exterior appears to ripple and flow like water, creating a sense of movement and fluidity.
The balconies are shaped like skeletal masks protruding from the walls. The wrought-iron designs twisting like bones, while the roof arches gracefully, reminiscent of a dragon’s scaled back.
The entire facade seems to breathe with a surreal, almost dreamlike quality, challenging conventional architectural norms and inviting passersby to marvel at Gaudí’s extraordinary vision of blending nature, art, and architecture into a single, stunning creation.
THE INTERIOR
Casa Batlló’s interior is a symphony of light, curves, and innovative design that seems to defy the very principles of construction.
Soft, undulating walls appear to breathe and flow, creating spaces that feel organic and alive: wooden banisters that seem to grow like branches to the intricate stained glass windows that filter sunlight in kaleidoscopic patterns; wooden doors and windows curve and twist with an almost supernatural grace, while skylights and interior wells are designed to maximize natural illumination, creating an ethereal atmosphere that shifts and changes throughout the day.
The entrance hall of Casa Batllo leads to an beautiful art nouveau, water-like grid which reveils a Jules Vernes universe. The curves, lights and shapes of this place resemble marine turtles, shells and underwater wolrd. In addition to this, the wooden staircase adds to the Belle Époque’s atmosphere.
The Patio of Lights, all through the noble flor and up to the attic, is under natural light. The light and dark blue tiles on the walls are what gives this part of the Casa Batllo the Mediterrean touch.

THE ROOF
Eccentric, magical, alien, the roof of Casa Batlló is a surreal sculptural landscape that transports visitors into the heart of Gaudí’s most imaginative architectural vision.
Ceramic and stone create forms that seem to breathe and move. Mondane structures like chimneys and ventilation towers look like the back of a dragon surface while other sculptural elements rise like warriors heading to the Mediterranean sea.
Walking across this rooftop is a dreamlike experience where sculpture tell stories of nature and imagination. The roof is not only worthed because of the unique view over Barcelona’s historic cityscape. The roof is a breathtaking artwork in its own right.
